What To Consider When You Whale Watch On Vacation

By Shari Swanson

As one of the most recommended ports from which to take a tour to whale watch Boston also has other attractions to offer. This makes it an excellent travel destination. A tourist is sure to spot at least one of the different species in that area when out.

Warm summer months are often touted as the best time to spot the majestic sea creatures. However, those offering the tours say that April to October will offer you the chance. In fact, most companies will guarantee you spot at least one during this period or refund the tourist's money.

The most prevalent types to catch sight of are the Minke, Finback and Humpback varieties. But, a lucky sightseer might also catch a glimpse of a Right or Sei variety occasionally.

While two to three hour tours are the most popular, there are many different lengths to choose from in the city port. A tourist also has many available boat options. However, the catamaran seems to be the preferred option.

As a boat approaches any whales, it should slow its speed. From one to two miles out, it should slow to 13 knots and from 600 feet out, the vessel should not exceed seven knots. A boat should never come within 100 feet and should not be out after dark.

The captain should know to always keep a distance of at least 500 yards when nearing a Right whale. These are protected by both state and federal regulations as they are nearing extinction. If a tourist spots any type caught in a net, he should alert the Coast Guard.

While visiting Boston, a whale watch can be the perfect way to pass an afternoon and sight one of the ocean's most majestic creatures. In this part of the country, it is almost certain throughout most of the year. The tourist should just seek to find a tour that follows all safety guidelines.
