By Charles Gallinger

Found in proximity to Central America in the eastern portion of the Pacific Ocean, the Galapagos Islands are made-up of individual volcanic isles that form an archipelago. The Galapagos Islands consist of thirteen major islands and a myriad of less significant isles. There is human habitation on a number of the isles. In the early part of the nineteenth century, a famous scientist studied on the Galapagos Islands, bringing them their first taste of global significance. Now, the Galapagos Islands are world famous due to the huge variety of plants and animals that reside on them.

Many of the species that inhabit the Galapagos Islands are incredibly fascinating. A myriad of these species are endemic to the Galapagos Islands, which means they are not able to found anywhere else in the world. This has made the archipelago increasingly popular with nature lovers from the world. Amongst the many animals that you can witness on the Galapagos Islands are flightless cormorants, Galapagos penguins, blue-footed and red-footed boobies, marine iguanas, sea lions, flamingos, and Galapagos tortoises.

Something that many tourists and scientists alike find fascinating about animals on the Galapagos Islands is that they seem quite unafraid of people. This is quite unusual for animals that are not domesticated. There are several possible theories for why these animals don't seem to fear human contact.

A common notion is that because the Galapagos Islands are rather isolated from the rest of the world and people did not destroy the natural habitats of the animals there, the creatures never had a viable reason to fear human contact. Another common theory is that the Galapagos Islands' lack of massive predators hasn't given the creatures there a reason to naturally fear any other living things.

The Galapagos Islands boast some of the most amazing views and coastlines anywhere on the planet. Most of the isles have beautiful coral reefs and many forms of underwater creatures in the water just off their beaches. Because of this, the snorkelers and scuba divers adore visiting the Galapagos Islands. If you are interested in engaging in either of these activities in the Galapagos Islands, you will need to find an instructor to take you on your excursion.

Due to the fact that a large number of the isles in the Galapagos archipelago are volcanic, they have interesting terrains that hikers enjoy immensely. There are all levels of trails, which means that people who simply want to walk around and enjoy the scenery and those who want to hike intensely can all find the perfect path.

If you would like to plan a trip to the Galapagos Islands, you should schedule an appointment with your travel agent or perform some online research. The Galapagos Islands offer activities your entire family will love.
