Many people don't think of Peruvian lands in terms of rain forests. Manu Wildlife Center is a national reserve which contains palm trees up to 100 feet in height. There are Brazil nut trees which are a cash crop for locals. You can travel by boat down the Madre de Dios River and see giant otters up to four feet long that play in Sandoval Lake. Another animal of interest is the tapir.

The Inca Trails extended over much of the Inca Empire from its centers at Cuzco and at Machu Picchu. There is only about 25 percent of the original network of paves roads that still can be seen. Tourists today can hike some of the remaining portions kept in passable condition through the efforts of the Peruvian government. Travel over these routes is strictly controlled and regulated, so if you want this experience, you will need to book in advance.

One of the most stunning example of Spanish architecture is in the City of Lima. Just spending time in Lima is enough vacation for many visitors. The Monastery and Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi consists of a church and monastery it also contains a library with around 25,000 volumes and catacombs. The architectural style is Spanish Baroque.

Preparing for a visit to the area of Lake Titicaca requires advance preparation. Otherwise, the altitude of this lake can lead to symptoms of altitude sickness. This record books say that this is the highest navigable body of water in South America. It is located on the Peruvian and Bolivian border. At 12K in elevation, it requires a slow acclimation to visit this part of the country.

A different type of physical fitness is needed when you want to do some mountain bike treks. Some travelers begin at Cusco and travel to Puerto Maldonado using a mountain bike. This type of exertion requires athletic stamina and is not for a person who hasn't prepared physically.

An opportunity to ride Peruvian Pasos horses makes an unforgettable holiday in Peru. These gaited horses have been called the Cadillac of horses. The ride is exceptionally smooth, with none of the jolting and bouncing that is typical of the quarter horse and other breeds. A horseback trek into back country is an experience that is not found anywhere else.
