Hotel Stars: What They Mean

By Joseph Tranturder

Don't spend your next trip to the east coast at airports and hotels! From New York City to the Appalachian Mountains, Miami Beach to Niagara Falls, there are countless attractions to visit and take in.While this list could go on and on, here are 11 of the most breathtaking spots our eastern United States has to offer:

A Word of Caution No, I'm not talking about one star hotels just yet. Rather, it's important to realize that there is no, one single scale that determines what stars which hotels get. Stars are given my hundreds of different organizations based on many different standards. The difference between Europe's 4-star system and America's 5-star system is just the beginning.

Mount Vernon Visit the residence of America's first president, George Washington, in Alexandria, Virginia! You can see Washington's tomb, tour his magnificent house, and the grounds of his estate.

5 Star Hotels Let's start with the best, shall we? 5 star hotels are the ones you see in James Bond movies. They are the top of the top, the classiest, ritziest, most heavenly places around. 5 star hotels offer 24/7 room service, valet parking, concierge service, top quality linens, in-room video, big screen TVs, and Jacuzzi bathtubs. Most 5 start hotels boast some of the world's best chefs and gourmet menus as well. They are located in beautiful and convenient areas and everything about them screams luxury and elegance.

This is especially true if you are going for a long distance flight. You may be tempted to eat that burger or go for some heavy spaghetti, but you will regret it when the jet lag hits and your stomach is reeling.

The Shenandoah Caverns The only cave system in Virginia with an elevator, The Shenandoah Caverns offers a one-mile tour of crystalline formations-all at a comfortable year-round temperature of 56 degrees.

Downtown Savannah The Savannah Historic District is the largest historical landmark in the country. Get a glimpse of pre-Civil War Georgia, with cobblestone streets, historic mansions, churches, and plenty of entertainment for the entire family!

3 Star Hotels Also very nice and comfortable, 3 star hotels also provide room service, concierge service, fitness rooms, pools, on-site restaurants, and convenient locations. They are clean and well decorated, but lack the fine elegance you would find in 5 or 4 star hotels.

Florida Everglades The Florida Everglades is the largest sub-tropical wilderness in the United States, and the home to many endangered species including manatees and the Florida panther. Try to spot an alligator while you're out on an air boat tour!

Many 2 star hotels do offer a small fitness area and/or a pool. They are usually located around airports, highways, and shopping centers.

You need to trick your body into thinking that it is night time and that means that you eat less if it is night time in the area where you are going. It also means that you turn off the lights and try and get some sleep.

The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk Housed in a classic 1860s factory on the shores of Long Island Sound, this aquarium is perhaps the most dazzling of its kind on the east coast.

Featuring the marine life of the sound, the Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk, Connecticut, boasts sharks, sea otters, and 259 species in all. If you are planning on attending this aquarium, definitely look for hotels in Norwalk, Connecticut!
