Tips On Being Successful In South Dakota Pheasant Hunts

By Minnie Whitley

Hunting pheasants is actually a very common hobby that a lot of people do because of the challenge that this kind of hobby would present. Now during South Dakota pheasant hunts, there are are a lot of things that the hunter would have to take note of because this activity is harder than it looks. If one is still a beginner, then these are some things to remember in order to have a good hunt.

Before even attempting to go on a hunt, it is very important to first do some research on the activities of the fowl. Now one has to remember to hunt these things early in the morning as this is the time they come out. If one does not like waking up early in the morning, then he may try late in the afternoon as this is another time wherein the fowls would come out.

Of course after during some research on this, then the next thing to do would be to prepare the equipment. Now the best type of gun that one can use if he is a beginner would be a twelve gauge shotgun because it is easy to operate. If he would want one with a stronger shot, he can use a twenty gauge one but it is harder to use as compared to the twelve gauge one.

Now the next thing that he should do would be to prepare his hunting dog for the trip as this will be his only companion that will help him. First, the dog has to learn how to smell the pheasant as the dog will be the one who will spot the target. This way, the dog will be the one leading the hunter to the desired target.

After teaching the dog how to sniff the bird, then the next thing it should be taught would be how to retrieve the bird. Now the smell of the dog will help it detect the dead pheasant. Once the dog has already detected the bird, then he just has to run to it and bring it back to the hunter.

Now when looking for these things, one should always try to go to a stream because these birds can usually be found near the edges of these streams. Pheasants are also known to be around crop edges. So when one would start a hunt, he should always start at these place because these are the places that they stay in the most.

One thing to take note of is that these birds have very sharp hearing. Once they hear something that is alarming, they will run and hide straight away. So the best thing to do would be to lead them out into an open area so that the hunter can see them.

The best way to do this would be to first locate the bird then shoot the gun in another direction completely away from the fowl. When the fowl hears this, he will change direction as he will not want to go near the area where he heard the gunshot. Use this strategy to bring it out into the open then shoot it once it presents itself.
