Important Basic Bug Out Bag Supplies

By Claudine Hodges

There are many people who are prepared to evacuate at a moment's notice. The reason could be a natural disaster, possible terrorist attack, foreign invasion, or collapse of our government. If you find yourself needing to run and in a hurry, you should have these important bug out bag supplies packed and ready to go. The idea is to have enough supplies to last three days not for long term survival. Just enough time to get you to a safe place or for rescue to arrive.

Clean drinking water is vital and sometimes overlooked. A person needs at the least, one liter per day. Have at least three liters in each pack. Also, it is important to have options available. Have iodine tablets and a small kettle or pot for boiling water. You will use the pot for cooking also.

Next item to consider is food. Camping and backpacking meals are easy to find at most stores and on the internet. Meals Ready to Eat (MRE) are packaged meals developed for the military and can be eaten cold or hot. Add protein bars, nuts, and even some hard candy to your supplies.

The clothing you take should be weather and locale appropriate. Have a pair of long pants, preferably not jeans, two shirts for layering, and a jacket that will keep you warm and dry. You also need a hat, two pairs of socks, long underwear that is warm, and a bandana. Do not skimp on your footwear and have a pair of good sturdy boots or shoes.

You will need shelter. Always consider the area and weather conditions you will be in. Have a tent or tarp to sleep under and stay dry. It is going to be important to stay dry so be sure to have a ground tarp or sleeping pad. A good sleeping bag or some type of bedroll will come in handy.

Always have a first aid kit. You can buy them already prepared but it would be better if you fill it yourself. That way you will have an intimate knowledge of what it contains and can manage it to fit your needs. In addition to bandages, gauze, splints, and first aid cream, include anti-diarrhea medication, allergy pills, sun block, and instant ice packs.

You may be thinking that is it, all set and ready to go. No, there is more. You must have a good hunting or survival knife, and a small pot or large cup to boil water in. Do not overlook having a hatchet and matches or a lighter. In addition, you need to know several ways to start a fire with out them in the event they get lost or your matches get wet. Having a fire may end up saving you.

The sky may not be actually falling, as Chicken Little declared, but many people believe there is a real threat of disaster visiting us. You may not be able to close the door to it and wait it out. Be ready by having these items ready to go with you at a moments notice. It will give you the peace of mind being prepared can bring.
