How Marine Transport Services Work

By Shirley Williams

If you are lucky enough to have a boat, you probably have many options for recreational use of it. From traveling to fishing to feed your family, or even just swimming and snorkeling in the middle of a waterway, you will get lots of use from it. However, at some point it may need repairs or you simply need to move it from one marina to another. Try utilizing the services of a Marine Transport company for this.

It does not matter how big or small your vessel is. It can even be a jet ski, which is not really a boat but is still a form of water transportation. From jet skis to large luxury yachts, there is no boat too big or too little to use these services, provided the company has a large enough trailer to handle the job.

Most likely, if a service can take on the largest boats, they can also take on the largest distances when it comes to the move as well. For example, you may have just sold your boat for a profit, but to someone on another continent. With enough time, the company can easily move that boat for you and deliver it on time and unscathed to your buyer.

No matter the length of the move, there is plenty of big, specialized and expensive equipment involved. Not only must you acquire these equipment pieces, but you have to learn to use them as well if you want to do it yourself. That is why it is best to let the pros do it. They have the huge hydraulic trailers and more.

Even if you did have a hydraulic lift, there is much more to transportation that just getting it on the trailer. For example, you will also have to make sure the weight is balanced so that it stays stable, or else you risk serious damage.

With all of this equipment and careful preparation that needs to be done before the move, you will want to ensure you are dealing with a good, reputable company. They should also be licensed for this type of work and insured. In fact, you should check for proof of liability insurance before you sign a contract. At a minimum, there should be at least one million dollars worth of liability coverage, or whatever the value of your boat is, just in case something happens.

When it comes to cost, it can vary wildly. Each company has their own formula for determining cost, and it depends upon how far you need to go, as well as the total length and weight of the boat you want moved. When calling or writing to get an estimate, you should know this information to help the representative figure out the cost. They may need other info such as the model of the boat to get a good determination.

Once you find an estimate within your budget, you can sign a contract to get the process underway. Just make sure they give you a delivery date. That way everyone is on the same page and knows exactly what to expect and how long the process is going to take.
