Key West Tarpon Fishing Methods

By Natasha Moore

Key West tarpon fishing is an activity that has benefited many fish eaters and the fishers. This brownish or silver fish has large body that is covered with huge scales. Its lungs help in inhaling oxygen found on water surfaces. It has a large heavy bone that points upward and the mouth is large. Key West, located south of an Island in Florida has been a place many go for trips to look at fish.

The fish feed on shrimps, crabs and smaller bait fish. Their migration takes place in months of June and May and this is when big numbers of large tarpons travel down the Oceanside flats of Florida Keys Island chain. Fly anglers around the world go to Florida Keys at this time to fish this mighty silver fish. Some of the methods they use to fish are the light tackle where they use shrimps and other foods to attract and harvest them.

There is also the use of night fishing that mostly takes place at night or the late evening hours. Tarpons are nocturnal, therefore sensitive to change in light intensity. Due to the fact that they like low light intensity, they are active at night and this when one can easily harvest them. Therefore, this method is good, although all other condition should be followed.

The hooks used should be well fixed since the fish can unfasten with the mouth. The mouth has tough texture and consistency like that of a cinder block. Use of fly rods is also a method used by anglers. This method works well in the morning when tarpon moves in deep water. Though an easy way of harvesting this fish, one should use the best pattern and color that easily draw it near the water surface.

This fish moves in deep waters during the early hours of the morning and hooking them on the fly can be tricky. Addition to that, they only feed from deep water food and to draw them near, one need a fly rod colors the water and moves the fish to the surface. Many like this method, which is well known. One can fish any time through the year unless when they have migrated though people go to fish where they have migrated.

However, the best time during the day is early morning and afternoon hours. These are the times when tides fluctuate because of the moon phases. These fishes are tidal feeders, therefore when sun rises during the early morning hours and sets during the evening; water is usually in motion making this fish act abruptly and rapid and this when one can get them easily.

Loads of tarpon migrate during certain time of the year and this determines the best months that one can do successful fishing. The annual migration of this fish starts in March and takes up to July. Therefore, April, May and June are the best months for harvesting large number of tarpon. However, one may not get large catches because many anglers do the fishing at this time.

In summary, Key West tarpon fishing turns to be the best activity that benefits anglers. It being the best place for harvesting these awesome types of fish, people, especially anglers are able to earn a living and feed their families. For instance, those licensed to do the work the whole day can get adequate fish to sell to their customers and for dinner.
