The month of February is the most enthusiastically awaited holiday of the year in the Dominican Republic. Carnaval is the largest and most colourful event that occurs among all of the other vacations. In Santiago, the Carnival first began in 1867. This is a memorable time when Dominicans attend parties, take a role in parades, wear outfits, go dancing in the street, drink and eat and have lots of fun with locals and visitors alike.

Each Sun. in Feb Carnival occurs in la Vega, Monte Cristi, Santo Domingo and San Cristobal. At times people can go over the top with these celebrations. As part of the gigantic parties, people dress in colorful get ups and masks and hit one another with inflated pig and cow bladders. In Santo Domingo, in the week of Carnival, there are multitudes of almost 100,000 people. This would be a glorious time to line up one of those holidays to Dominican Republic to catch the custom of Carnival week!

The most frequently recognised mask of the Carnival, which is named the Diablo Cojuelo Mask, had its origins in Santo Domingo and La Vega. The practice of the Carnaval called "Puerto Plata" is that the Diablo Cojuelo, or horned devil, lashes out at all who take part in this event with an inflated cow bladder so as to purge the sins from the viewers.

There are many parties that occur throughout the year in the country of the Dominican Republic. Visitors are always warmly welcomed to perform a part in these festivals. This Caribbean country is legendary for its music and colorful festivals that attract visitors from every part of the world.
