Enjoy The Best Of Florida With Key West Fishing Charters

By Jerri Perry

Some people prefer holiday destinations with good nightlife while others want beaches or plenty of daytime action. A great destination offers all of these and more and if it's easy to get there too, it really is the place for a perfect holiday. Florida's most famous key is one of those destinations and with Key West fishing charters, you'll never be bored during your break.

The city and island of Key West have for many decades been the place to go for Americans who needed some warm weather during the winter months. President Harry S Truman was just one of the many luminaries who had a winter home here. However, the famous name that is always mentioned in the same breath as the island's name is Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway was holidaying here when he discovered the joys of working with the rod and reel.

If you want to follow in Hemingway's wake, you need to go out onto the open ocean at least once to try and snag a big one. The big fish species live in the deep waters beyond the barrier reef around the keys. Marlin, sailfish, tuna and mahi-mahi, which is called dolphin fish in these parts, are some of the beauties that you can try and catch.

If big game fish seems too advanced for you, try light tackle first. This is suitable for groupon, sharks and snapper. The Keys are famous for tarpon as well, which you'll find in spring. These species live in the shallower waters around the reefs, so bring some snorkeling gear too. There are plenty of colorful marine life and fascinating shipwrecks to explore.

There are some areas closer to shore where the water is very shallow. Even here you'll be able to find plenty of fish. Take a flats skiff and try to hook the Key West Grand Slam of bonefish, tarpon and permit in one day. Barracuda love these waters too.

Some people don't like the solitude of a fishing trip or chartering a boat may simply be too expensive for them. If you fall into this category, going out on a party boat may be the option for you. With one of these, you share the boat with a large group, which makes it a great way to meet new people and to take along the kids or friends who don't really like catching fish. This is probably not for you if you're a serious angler, though.

You can visit Key West at any time of year. High season is in the drier winter months when the weather is absolutely perfect. If you'd like to avoid the crowds though, visit in summer. During this time it will be a breeze to find affordable accommodation in or around the city. Most summer days see downpours in the morning but sunny weather for the rest of the day. Just check the hurricane warnings before you go out to sea.

There are many companies that have websites where you can compare and book Key West fishing charters. This is a good option for high season. If you prefer waiting to see what the weather will be doing, simply walk around the city and visit the many charter companies to see what's on offer. Then release your inner Hemingway and you may even solve the problem of what to have for dinner.
