Facts About Fly Fishing Key West

By Jayne Rutledge

The angling technique that makes use of artificial flies for catching fish is known as fly fishing. Fly casting is achieved through the use of a fly rod, specialized weighted line and a reel. The fishermen use flies which are held by hand and are very much like natural invertebrates or other food sources. These are used for making fish to strike. When looking to go for fly fishing Key West residents should consider several useful tips.

Choosing the flies will be an important exercise. The factors that govern the choice of flies are size, shape, color and action of flies respectively. When fishing is to be done in salty water however, action is the most important factor to consider. The construction of flies is done such that they can float, be sunken partially or sink. Fish usually expect their food sources to be in certain water columns. This should be known by fishermen for success.

Choosing the right colors is done while considering seasonal patterns. In late fall, early spring and winter, flies used are darker in color so that they effectively match the color of the surroundings. Lighter flies are used during warmer weather. Choosing the right colors is very important as it determines how successful the exercise will be.

The flies used are either impressionistic or even exact imitations. Their level of effectiveness will depend on how selective the fish is as a result of food availability, weather conditions and fishing pressure. When approaching fish, this should be done from outside their cone of visibility. It is worth remembering that fish that are under water are able to see further than those that are on the surface. This is due to the effect of refraction.

Because of the sensitivity of fish to sounds and vibrations, fishermen should approach slowly. Watching the behavior of fish before casting is very important. The timing of its rises needs to be observed so that the right flies are put on the water, and so that they arrive when the fish begins to look upward. In water that is salty, learning the speed at which target fish take flies will be instrumental to success.

When casting rising fish, fishermen should not target rise rings. The fly would need to be put about 3 or 4 feet in front where the fish was last seen to rise. At certain times, there is need to allow for time to throw upstream mends into the lines. Whenever there are difficult currents that create a drag fast, the fisherman will have to throw close to fish in a way that they see the flies before they begin to look unnatural.

For effective nymphing, there will be two major requirements. The first is to stay in touch with flies and also using drag free drifts. This normally is best achieved by extending the rod and keeping most of the line out of the current.

In considering the method fly fishing Key West residents have several useful tips. It will however take some time before one gains the required experience. It is among the cheap methods used to fish.
