How to Properly Cut a Cigar

By Harrison Hyde

When you take a look at the prices for some cigar accessories, you may start wondering if there are ways that you could save a bit of money here and there. In fact, you may start asking yourself "can I use a knife to cut a cigar?" The answer to this question is technically "yes" but, if at all possible, you should avoid it.

With most high-end cigars, properly cutting the cigar is essential to ensuring that the cigar is smoked in the proper manner. Most cigar smokers will regularly carry with them a specially designed cigar cutter that allows them to easily and efficiently cut the end of the cigar. This device allows for a clean cut, which eliminates any possibility of ripping the cigars wrap. However, there are times when a cigar cutter is not available. When circumstances like this arise, there are other ways to ensure that the cigar is cut in a fashion that allows for it to be smoked properly.

As previously stated, cutting the cap off the cigar with a knife is incredibly tricky and difficult. Not only does it increase the chances of ruining your cigar, it also increases the chances of becoming injured during the cutting process, as the knife could easily slip. The best way to cut your cigar is with an actual cigar cutter. There are many different types of cutters that you can choose from. Each of these unique cutters will change the smoking experience you have. In fact, using a knife to cut a cigar should only be a last resort if you are in a location where no cutter is available.

A good cigar deserves to be treated appropriately. If you find yourself asking whether or not a knife is an acceptable cigar cutting tool, you should definitely consider purchasing a high-quality cutter. They don't cost very much money and they are very durable. If you want to spend a bit more, you can get one of sufficient quality that it will probably be something that you can pass down as an heirloom.

There are also hole punch cutters that are more effective than using a knife. Some of these can be attached to your key ring so that you always have access to it where ever you might end up being.
