How Fishing Lights Are Used

By Casandra Newton

Fishermen make use of fishing lights to attract shrimps, insects, fish and other members of this food chain to a specific area where they are harvested. The light attractor is attached to a structure on the boat such that it is either below the water or slightly above it. The light attracts the fish because of the color.

Fishermen seek environments where the conditions are conducive for fish. Fish also move in a similar way when looking for insects and smaller fish to feed on. Small fish in turn look for areas where there is plenty of plankton.

Scientific research has proven that the eyes of fish are very sensitive to green and blue colors. This fact has been attributed to the fact that these animals spend their life in water which tends to be greenish or bluish in color. When the water has small matter which is particulate in nature light in the blue region of the spectrum is scattered. Water with plants and nutrients scatters green color. This is because photosynthetic microorganism and plants absorbs the red color in the spectrum and what is left is mostly green.

While most people may be aware that fish and other water animals are attracted to light few know the best color for this purpose. Biologists explain that the visual receptors of fish and other water animals are most attracted to blue and green colors. This is why fishing lights are designed to use these colors.

Many other colors such as yellow can be used but they should be of very high intensity. White light is also good because it has green and blue energy portions in it. A high intensity ensures that fish can see the light from miles away. Other features of good attractors include being submersible and portability as well.

Fishing lights are split into two. There are those that are permanently fixed and those that are usually carried from one location to the other. Portable attractors receive their power supply from batteries. They produce light of low intensity and they can only be used for a short period of time. Incandescent headlights are the most common forms of attractors that are portable. They use 12 volts. Fluorescent lamps are also good portable attractors.

Light that is permanent needs 115 volts and it is usually mounted on poles. A light attractor which is permanent can be fixed and operated every night to attract large fish. Large fish take a couple of days to notice the increasing concentration of small fish which are attracted to the light. After fish have gotten used to the light everyday they will begin to return to the same location at predictable times in the evening.

Most of the light from attractors gets reflected back in the air by the water surface. To reduce this aluminum reflectors are used to direct the light back into the water. You can also use submersible fishing lights which shine twice as much under the water surface. You should be careful to avoid a shock.
