Info About Wilderness Survival Training

By Ladonna Franklin

Wilderness survival training is one way to get back in touch with nature and appreciate the beauty and harmony found there. If you want to get away from the city for a day or a week, these types of programs can teach you all the needed basic outdoor skills. Terms are very reasonable and all of the materials are provided, often including a training manual.

The native American peoples lived in harmony with nature and respected the environment. They knew about natural resource management and living off the land. Many people would like to learn some of these same skills which have become almost a lost art in our modern urban and tech-savvy world.

Not only do they offer an adventurous challenge but these programs also teach about conserving natural resources and reconnecting with nature and its cycles. There are also skilled instructors on hand who can teach basic outdoor skills. Most people are interested to learn such basic skills as how to build a shelter from different materials available, how to start a fire with flint and sticks, and finding plants and animals that are safe to eat as well as drinking water.

A wide variety of programs is being offered. One course is called the ultra-light because students can only bring the bare minimum of equipment such as a blanket, rain poncho and a knife. No one can bring watches or hand phones and not even tents or stoves are brought along. In this way, students learn to live like the Native American Indians did and get a chance to practice their skills and methods. Students can sign up for a seven-day course and if you are especially hardy, there is even a month-long course.

Some people prefer to start off with a one-day program in some of the spectacular wilderness areas that are still around in states like Utah or Colorado. For the more adventurous, there are such options as the Lost Coast program which is a four-day trip hiking through forty miles of California coastline that is inaccessible by highway. Most people start off with the one-day program so that they can learn the basic skills and then gradually build up to the more challenging ones.

Those participating in the one-day program will be asked to bring along their own lunch and snacks as well as a backpack. Those joining the longer programs, other than the ultra light, will need to bring such camping gear as a sleeping bag, tent, backpack and water bottle.

There are also well-established schools that are dedicated to teaching outdoor skills. These operate more extensive training programs that offer students a hands-on learning approach under the guidance of skilled instructors. These seek to teach students how to develop a close harmony with nature and interact wisely with its resources along with teaching practical outdoor skills.

Wilderness survival training offers unparalleled adventure in the wild as well as useful skills training. Anyone who has undertaken one of these programs will be well prepared for any disasters or emergencies. In addition to helping people re-connect with nature, it also offers opportunities to build character and learn leadership skills.
