The truth is that most of the animals spend much of their time high up in the trees. From the forest floor, your can't distinguish them very well, since they are up high in 30 m high trees. But due to the hilly terrain, few Amazon headwaters are navigable and only one network of interconnected lakes is known any place in the Andes countries, the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve. The latter features a bowl-shaped plain with a shallow outlet, so that water stagnates, thus creating a massive forested swamp. one of the few reserves on earth extending on both sides of the equator.
There isn't any other park in Venezuela, Colombia, Peru or Bolivia that is so near the Andean Mountain Range that has so many lakes and narrow rivers which is so conveniently accessible as Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve. In fact, worldwide, not one other Amazon park may be visited so easily and at such affordable prices. It will only take 30 minutes to fly from the Quito to LagoAgrio, the port of entry to the Amazon Region of Ecuador, and from that point an hour and a half or so over an asphalt road to the park. All this makes Cuyabeno the greatest Amazon park on earth for observing wildlife!
Whilst not excessively luxurious, the Cuyabeno Lodge is the most comfortable lodge on the Cuyabeno Lake. Rainforest Alliance certified, the lodge was developed 25 years or so ago by a small grouping of wildlife managers during a period when the park had been invaded buy illegal settlers. The initiators wanted to provide alternative income from ecotourism for the local communities in an era when there still was no tourism to the area.
Now 25 years or so later, the park is well-protected because the Government has understood the importance of the area, now that it is being visited by some 14,000 visitors per year. The owners are continuously working at improving the quality of the lodge as well as the excursions. As conservationists, for them nothing is more important than that every tourist leaves the area with an unforgettable impression of the tropical rainforest. The lodge includes a tree crown observation tower overlooking the entire lake. With the combined elevation of the tower on the hill where the lodge is built, the communication system has the best signal in the area. With the ranger station of the National Park Service on its premises, the lodge functions as the alarm center of the reserve. Solar panels provide energy twenty four hours per day in every buildings. Charging the batteries of your cameras is always possible. The lodge also offers warm water for all guests.[ I:8:J]
