How To Use A Rock Climbing Wall Effectively

By Kelly Wood

Climbing can be a fantastic exercise. It works the upper body, the core and the legs. However not everyone is blessed with mountains or safe areas to climb near them. Therefore you may want to find a gym or sports center with a rock climbing wall so you can develop your skills in a safe environment.

There are other benefits to doing this in an indoor environment or other controlled space. If you are looking to try out climbing on vacation then this is a safe way to practice and develop your abilities. Therefore you can be free to develop and learn without worrying about falling and potentially injuring yourself.

Another option is to go to a gym with a wall. Remember to choose a gym with qualified staff supervising it. They ought to be able to answer any questions you have about using the equipment and guide you to make sure that you use the equipment correctly and safely.

Before you begin a climb it is recommended you do strengthening exercises. Use squeeze balls to improve your grip and weights to increase the strength in your arms. If a gym has it use a low bar so that you can practice static hanging. Over time this will then make it easier to do so when you climb.

Core strengthening exercises are also important. Leg raises and dumb bell side bends are good examples of core strengthening. This will make it easier for your arms and legs to work in harmony as you climb. Lunges and squats are good to improve the power in your legs, something that can often be overlooked.

Remember before you start to warm up. Get your hands and feet warmed up as well as your arms and legs. You should then find that you are able to do your first climb without getting cramps, something that may put people off when they do it for the first time and forget to properly warm up. As with any exercise make sure you have a bottle of water with you and wear loose clothing for ease of movement.

A temptation for people starting is to attempt the hardest routes first. This is a bad idea. Not only will you find it very hard but there is an increased risk of injury when you attempt to do too much too soon. Building up gradually is better for your long term development as a climber!

In simple terms using a rock climbing wall is about developing your muscles, gradually developing your skills and generally being sensible. Look for gyms and sports centers that offer professional supervision as they will be able to keep you safe as well as give you encouragement and pointers where necessary. Look online to see what is available in your local area as well as feedback on the best gyms near you.
