South Texas is very famous for deer hunting. This activity is practiced by many people in this region for recreational purposes. Bucks are in plenty in this area and they have antlers that many people like to harvest. Many ranches are private. However, there is public land in the area as well. The two types of animals that are hunted are the whitetail and the mule deer. The mule is small in size and it has antlers that are shorter. The whitetail is found in large numbers and this makes it more popular. It also has bigger antlers. Deer hunting began long ago in the 1600s. At about this time the Spanish people moved into Texas and found a lot of wildlife.

When the Spaniards came here they found plenty of wildlife. There were many bucks and no predator. The population of the deer declined sharply after 1860. This is because of overhunting and overgrazing. To ensure that they did not become extinct conservation measures were introduced in this region. By 1960s their population had grown and they could now be hunted in large numbers.

Most people use an outfitter or a guide when they want to hunt. Though this option is expensive it is popular. Many people who own the land have guided hunt operations on their ranches. Sometimes the land is leased to outfitters who then become guides. There are many advantages of using a guide when going to hunt. Guides will teach you how to shoot properly. They will also place you in good positions that will make it easier for you to make a kill.

Some ranches charge different rates according to the size of the animal that you kill. In the private ranches everything apart from licensing is handled by the guides. Hunts for the whitetail and the mule deer are done in separate places. You can hunt turkeys alongside the bucks. Hunts can go on for up to five days. Meals and accommodation can be organized if you want to hang around for several days.

Accommodation and food can be organized for if you want to spend some days in the wild. Going for hunts in the lands that are public is cheap. You do not have to pay for anything apart from your license. There are several forests in Texas that have developed and primitive grounds where visitors can camp. Trails for hiking and horse riding are also available.

There are regulations and rules when going for a hunt. Not all vehicles are suitable. There are also restrictions on the places you can visit. Take precautions when traveling in remote locations. There are areas that are famous and frequented by tourists. You can save yourself time and use the internet to figure out good spots for hunts.

Talk to outfitters online to find out the charges for a guided hunt. You should book in advance to get the best from your tour. South Texas deer hunting is popular with many tourists. It attracts a lot of people during the season.
