Electric Bug Racket - Get Rid of Pesky Bugs

By Garrick Maxwell

Nothing spoils a summer evening spent outside than pesky insects. In the past, people have had to resort to using swatters or harmful sprays to combat these pests. Now, however, an electronic device is available to help get rid of flying bugs without having to encounter dangerous chemicals or chase an insect around to kill it. Bug zappers are making summertime nights more bearable for people who love to spend time outdoors.

These traps look like metal boxes or rectangles. They use electricity to operate and most of them need to be plugged into an electrical outlet. Once the trap is plugged into an outdoor outlet or connected by an extension cord to an indoor outlet, a person can hang it by doors or by windows to help get rid of bugs that might be trying to get in to the building. These buildings can include houses, sheds, and barns.

The light bulbs inside these boxes shine fluorescent or ultraviolet light. This special kind of light captures a bug's attention and draws them to the trap. Once they are in the machine, the zapper's grid kills the bug with a powerful zap of electricity. The zapped insect collapses to the trap's floor.

The bigger traps use electrical outlets for their power. But some models now can be operated from batteries. These handheld bug zappers are portable, making them perfect for the fisherman or camper who often has no access to outlets in the wilderness.

The grids within the trap carry a large amount of voltage. Some traps' grids can carry as much as two thousand volts of electricity and as much guarantee that most insects will be killed once they reach the grid. The only insects that cannot be killed by these appliances are female mosquitoes. Female mosquitoes are too small to be detected by the grid. As such, they can fly in and out of trap without being killed.

Annoying flying bugs can be controlled by an electronic bug zapper. Having one of these machines near a door, window, or placed strategically on the porch or patio can go a long way in avoiding some of the worst flying pests. These machines are safe to use at any location in a person's house or yard.
