Things to Consider Before Buying Basketball Shoes

By Lee Stackhouse

If you're serious about playing basketball, you probably know that having the right shoes can make a real difference. When you have good quality basketball shoes that fit properly, you play better, and your feet are protected. If you've ever had an uncomfortable pair of shoes, you know how trying and even painful that can be. Let's look at some of the things you should be aware of when shopping for basketball shoes.

Recently we have covered plenty of sports issues (our post on jump manual review is an example of this). We're gonna continue that trend today!

Since you can find basketball shoes at all different prices, you first need to have a budget in mind. The fact is, if you play basketball regularly, you'll have to buy new shoes frequently. So buying the most expensive shoes isn't practical if you don't have a substantial budget for them. It's possible to find good basketball shoes for around forty dollars, but the prices go well into the hundreds. You should avoid extremely low end shoes, though, such as ones that are under twenty dollars. Shoes like that will wear out in no time, and may result in problems for your feet or ankles. In some cases you can find quality brands at surprisingly affordable prices, especially if you shop around a little.

You are going to notice that basketball shoes come in a variety of materials and many of them are man-made. Whereas in the past, most shoes were made from leather, today many use a combination of materials, such as mesh and synthetic, that are more durable and offer the best support and stability. The first basketball shoes were made out of canvas, and you can still find these today. While you won't think of canvas as modern by any stretch of the meaning, they can offer a lot of comfort and durability. It is far better to buy a shoe based on how it feels on your feet, so try on your basketball shoes, as opposed to buying shoes based on the material they're made from.

Once you've found the right basketball shoes, make sure you care for them in a way that makes them last as long as possible. If you don't wear your basketball shoes when you're not on the court, they'll last a lot longer. Basketball will wear out your shoes of course, but if you wear them all the time, this will accelerate the process. A place that's dry and has decent ventilation is the best place to store basketball shoes. Wet, damp or humid spots are not good for the health of your footwear. The best attitude to have towards your basketball shoes is to think of them as equipment made only for playing ball. It's not worth the risk to play basketball in shoes that aren't up to the task. Try to find shoes that are made by a reputable brand and that feel just right when you try them on. The worst thing is to continue wearing shoes that are all worn out, as this can put you at risk for many problems. So don't forget these facts about basketball shoes when you go shopping for them. A good pair of shoes can make all the difference, and your feet will thank you for taking care of them!
