Discover Some Popular Ecotourism Destinations In North America

By Laura Gallagher

More people than ever are looking for ways to lessen any negative impact on their environment. This even extends to planning vacations that allow them to reduce their carbon footprint and give back to the region they visit. Travelers can choose from several ecotourism destinations in North America with suitable choices available in Canada, Mexico and Alaska.

Vacationers can contact the Alaska Wilderness Recreation and Tourism Association for options in this remote state. The group works on behalf of all organizations dependent on the wilderness in Alaska. Their work offers protection for the region's sustainability of cultural and natural resources.

Travelers to Alaska can climb a glacier or explore Katmai National Park with its many active volcanoes. Some visitors will take a dog sled ride or kayak down the fords among the mountain ranges. Boat trips offer passengers close encounters with orca and humpbacked whales.

Canada features many different wilderness regions to explore. Unpopulated areas spread out from 100 miles north of its border with the United States and stretch from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. Protection of land in Gatineau Park draws attention to conservation education while offering the chance to snowshoe, camp and cycle. Brown bears, cougars, wolves and coyotes inhabit the park

Tour companies in Mexico offer professionally guided safaris to the Mayan Caves or the Floating Jungle. Eco-tours along the Yucatan Peninsula offer hiking, snorkeling, bird watching and a variety of archaeological sites to explore. Off grid rental units offer varied accommodations from beachside villas to small resorts nestled in the jungle.

Travelers will have the most enjoyable experience taking advantage of ecotourism destinations if they do their homework before leaving home. Individuals should learn about the culture, history and customs in the region they plan to visit. The overall plan should include using local guides, transportation and restaurants as ways of making a positive contribution to the local economy.
