Traveling With Toddlers? Here Are 10 Things To Remember

By Rebecca Taylor

It can be torture to travel with toddlers. Vacation excitement can quickly turn into temper tantrums if you're not prepared and new sights and sounds can be overwhelming to a young child.

Here are 10 parent-practiced tips to help make traveling with toddlers fun.

Try choosing a family-friendly destination. Instead of choosing the crowded tourist destinations, go for a locale that is accustomed to having kids around.

Safety should be your first priority. Have you checked if your child's seat car is properly secured? A removable window shade can also be used to help block the sun.

Don't forget to bring some entertainment. During their time in the car, make sure that there are games, movies, or anything they can play with. This will help pass the time and make them less focused on being in the car.

Plan your rest stops. If you're driving, break up the monotony by stopping every couple of hours (or more frequently if necessary). After being cooped up in a car for a while, kids need to stretch out. You can bring along a ball to kick or throw around during these breaks.

Flexibility is important. Set realistic expectations and let your child soak up the experience at his or her own pace. It would be better if you limit your activities to just one a day. If not, then an over-stimulated toddler is what you could end up with.

Make sure that you have water and plenty of snacks with you. Mini juice cartons and small boxes of cereal, granola bars, and fruits are some of the healthy snacks that you can include.

Bring a beloved item as well. A blankie or cuddly toy will help your toddler feel safe and secure. Also try also to have a replacement on hand. If the original got lost, it will save you some heartache.

Your day should start and end early. Plan accordingly because kids are at their best in the morning.

Try to stick to your routine. If your child eats, naps, and plays at the same time each day, then it's likely they may feel comfortable in a new environment.

Don't forget to take lots of pictures. They're only young once, so enjoy every moment!
