Planning Your Family Vacation

By Robert Trivett

Many families don't go on vacation because planning them is simply too stressful and time consuming. But, if you can plan your vacation following a few simple tips, you will find that the planning itself can be a lot of fun, and your family will love getting involved in the preparations. You shouldn't give up on going on vacation, as long as you plan the right way.

First of all, try to figure out how much time you can take off work and school, and which time of year it will be possible to go. This will affect how far you can go and where you will be able to travel to because of weather and other considerations. As an example, if you can only vacation for four days, going all the way to Australia would not be a good idea, but maybe you and your family can go to a beach in Florida where you can relax together.

What is your vacation budget?

You will also want to think about your budget. When you know how much time you can take off you will then be able to base what you can actually do on how much you are able or want to spend. Even if you can take three days off, having a tight budget will not allow you to travel through Europe, so maybe you need to plan a less expensive vacation. You need to be very honest where your budget is concerned so you can enjoy yourself while on your trip instead of worrying about money the whole time. If your budget is particularly small, there is nothing wrong in going to visit some nearby attraction which will be fun for the whole family.

Once you have decided how much time you can go for, and how much you can afford to spend, it is time to decide the type of activities your family will enjoy. If everyone in your family is older and capable you might want to think about an adventure type vacation. However, if your kids are still young theme parks, beaches, and camping are great ideas. Remember that your vacation doesn't have to be fancy, just has to be something that is age and level appropriate for the whole family. If you are not sure about your options, find something the youngest person in the family will enjoy, and everyone else can have fun around that.

When you go about the planning process in this order you will be doing it in a successive manner where you build one piece of information on top of the other so that by the time you consider what type of activities you can all do you know where you want to go and you are ready to make your reservations. If your whole family is going to be involved in the planning, you might do this on a voting system, or you, as the parent, will make choices for everybody, but regardless of how you work it out, this method is pretty much straightforward and foolproof.
