Kayak Lights Have Two Purposes At Least

By Claudia Campos

It's a great feeling to take a boat out on the water at night. It's nice, peaceful, quiet, and with few others out there, it's a great time for fishing. It's still dangerous so night time boating requires the safety of a lit signal. Some kayak lights can also have a second benefit too.

Having kayaks out at night means facing some dangers that people who go out on the water in daytime may not experience. One of these is the possibility of collision with other avid boaters. Because kayaks are so quiet, it's really hard to hear anything but the slap of a paddle on water, and that really isn't enough to prevent being run over.

All boats need to have an unhindered form of lighting to be seen. It needs to be bright and to be placed in a very visible spot. Putting one on a single side of a boat is not a good idea. The light needs to be seen on all sides and not be blocked by the person driving the boat.

Some lighting kits will come with two types of light. They will include enough for there to be one on each side of the boat. They may also include some for the actual cockpit where the pilot sits too. This is helpful for fishermen who need to bait hooks.

LED lighting on the boat's exterior surfaces can be used in two ways, one intended and one rather accidental. The first way is to make the boat visible and prevent collisions. However, it's also been said that the same lighting meant for safety also attracts the fish people are out at night fishing for. As well, the lighting in the cockpit itself can be purchased in warm amber, a light known to prevent the attracting of biting bugs.

Going out on the water at night is a great opportunity. It comes with hazards too. It's important that all boaters be safe on the water, and using proper kayak lights to make sure the boat is seen is the safest thing to do.
